Ryder Cup Betting & Odds

The Ryder Cup isn’t just another golf tournament, it’s one of the most anticipated events in the sport. Golf is known as an individual game but not during the Ryder Cup. This is a team event where the best players from the USA face off against Europe’s finest. Every putt, every chip, every risky hero shot carries serious bragging rights and the atmosphere reflects that from start to finish.

Part of what makes the Ryder Cup so entertaining and different is the variety of match formats. With three different ways to play throughout the tournament you get a mix of strategy, drama and flair. For many viewers the highlight is the four balls, where players can take bigger risks than they normally would in singles play.

If you fancy getting in on the action, BetWright has you covered. We’ve got a full line-up of Golf betting markets for the Ryder Cup so you can follow every twist and turn with a wager that suits you.

What is the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup is a golf competition which dates back to 1927 as a match originally between the USA and Britain. The Tournement grew in stature in 1979 when Britains team expanded to cover all of continental Europe with this format being kept the same ever since.

With it taking place every two years the next Ryder Cup is set to tee off on the 13th of september 2027 with the winner being decided on the 19th of september 2027.

What makes the Ryder Cup really stand out is its match play format instead of the usual stroke play. Played across three days, the two teams go head-to-head in foursomes, four-ball and singles matches to decide which team gets to lift the iconic trophy.

Ryder Cup Formats

As we mentioned, the Ryder Cup tests golfers in three different formats; each testing different aspects of a players game as well as adding to the entertinment of the tournament. These three formats are:

  • Fourball: A four-ball match lets every golfer play their own ball but only the best score from each team counts for the hole. This format usually leads to a mix of strategies, with one player often taking the safer route while the other goes for riskier shots knowing they have a safety net if it goes wrong.
  • Foursomes: Foursomes are played in teams of two with both players playing the same ball and alternating every shot which makes teamwork crucial. It is often the most nerve-wracking format for golfers, since every swing affects not just their score but their partner’s as well.
  • Singles: Singles takes place on the last day of the Ryder Cup and puts one player from each team up against each other. On each hole, whoever scores the lowest wins that hole. Whoever wins the most holes in a 18 hole round wins the match and earns their team a point.

How is the Ryder Cup Scored?

The Ryder Cup uses a point scoring system which is pretty simple to follow. Each match a team wins gives one full point for their total score, unless the match is a tie, in which case both teams get half a point. Over the tournament there are 28 points up for grabs so the first team to score 14.5 points or more wins the Ryder Cup. It's as simple as that.

In the event that the tournament ends 14-14 there isn't any kind of playoff. The team that started the tournemanent as champions keeps the trophy, in 2027s case that would make europe champions.

Often, the Ryder Cup comes down to the final few singles matches on Sunday making the order of play a key strategy for each team. Captains usually send out players who handle pressure well later in the lineup, while those who struggle under the spotlight go earlier. This is to try and ensure if the tournament comes down to the final hole, the player taking the shot can hold up to the pressure.

Previous Winners of the Ryder Cup

Team Europe are the defending Ryder Cup champions after their impressive victory over Team USA in 2025 at the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York. Stand out performances from Tommy Fleetwood and another strong strategy from captain Luke Donald secured a nailbaiting 15 - 13 win and brought the famous trophy back across the Atlantic.
