A Different Kind of Book
Book of Shadows gives the traditional Book of slot concept a gothic makeover. Instead of ancient ruins and sun-baked temples, you're heading into a mysterious woodland filled with eerie characters, creepy creatures and an unmistakably supernatural atmosphere.
The reels are surrounded by leafless trees and flickering lights, while wolves howl and owls hoot in the background. It's an unusual setting for a Book slot, but one that fits the game's darker personality.
The symbols continue the theme, with eyeballs, butterflies, goat skulls, purple cats and gothic characters joining the usual 10-A symbols.
Choose Your Shadow Rows
One of the biggest differences with Book of Shadows is that you're not restricted to a single reel configuration.
The game starts with three rows, giving you 10 Shadow Rows. You can then increase the playing area to four or five rows, with 15 or 20 Shadow Rows respectively.
Each setup has its own RTP:
- 3 rows: 90.15% RTP
- 4 rows: 90.03% RTP
- 5 rows: 90.12% RTP
The volatility remains High, regardless of the number of rows selected.
The extra rows also increase the stake, so the 3-row setup provides the standard bet level, while activating four or five rows increases the cost of each spin.
How to Play Book of Shadows
Book of Shadows uses traditional left-to-right wins, with matching symbols needing to appear from the first reel.
- Choose between three, four or five rows.
- Set your stake within the available range.
- Spin the reels and look for matching symbols.
- Land three or more Book Scatters to trigger Free Spins.
- Watch for the randomly selected Golden Symbol during the bonus.
- Golden Symbols can expand to cover entire reels after winning combinations are evaluated.
- Use the game's additional features where available to change how your session plays.
The Book Scatter also acts as a Wild, substituting for regular symbols when forming winning combinations.
Gamble Features
Book of Shadows includes two gamble-style features.
The 50/50 Gamble lets you risk a qualifying win on a simple red or black card choice. Pick correctly and the amount doubles, while the wrong choice ends the gamble.
There's also the Wheel of Bonus, which gives you the opportunity to gamble a qualifying win for 10 Free Spins at your current row height. The wheel contains a highlighted segment, with the size of the segment determined by the qualifying win.
Both features are optional, so you can continue with your winnings rather than taking the gamble.
Book of Shadows Free Spins
Landing three or more Book Scatters triggers the Free Spins feature, with three Scatters awarding 10 spins at your current row height.
Before the feature begins, a Golden Symbol is randomly selected. You can reshuffle it once if you want to try for a different symbol, although the replacement can work against you too.
During Free Spins, the Golden Symbol becomes particularly important. Whenever it contributes to a winning combination, it expands to cover the entire reel after the win has been evaluated.
Unlike regular symbols, expanded Golden Symbols can pay from any position rather than needing to land next to each other.
This can create some sizeable combinations, particularly when the feature is played on the full five-row setup.
Growing the Free Spins Feature
The number of rows remains an important part of the bonus. You can adjust the row height for the Free Spins feature, allowing you to choose between a smaller setup or more Shadow Rows.
Landing three or more Book Scatters during Free Spins also retriggers the feature, giving you another 10 spins at the selected row height.
The multipliers and expanding Golden Symbols make the bonus round very different from the base game, with the potential for entire reels to become part of a winning combination.
