What is an Each Way Bet?
Dont know what an Each Way bet is? Don't worry, we break it down in our Each Way betting guide!

What is an Each Way bet?
An each way bet is effectively made up of two separate wagers and is most commonly used in horse racing betting and greyhound betting. One part of your stake goes on your horse, greyhound or selection to win the race, while the other part is placed on it to finish in the places.
A place means the selection doesn't have to win but it must finish within the positions that qualify for a payout. The number of places paid depends on how many runners are in the race. You can find this information clearly displayed on BetWright at the top of the market, just before the full list of runners and before adding your selection to the bet slip.
How does an each way bet work?
You can look at an each way bet as two separate bets. One part is on the horse to win, the other is on the horse to finish within the places. So, if you place a £5 each way bet on a horse to win, your total stake will come to £10. Half of that is staked on the horse to win the race, while the remaining £5 covers the place part of the bet.
How is an each way bet paid out?
An each way bet is settled as two separate bets, one on the win and one on the place; the payout depends on how your selection finishes.
If your selection wins the race, both parts of the bet are successful. You are paid out at the full odds for both the win portion and for the place portion.
If your selection doesn’t win but finishes in one of the paying places, the win part of the bet loses, but the place part is paid out at the place odds. Place odds are a fraction of the win odds, typically 1/4 or 1/5, depending on the race and number of runners.
If your selection finishes outside the places, both parts of the each way bet lose and there is no return.
Why place an each way bet?
Placing an each way bet can be a smart option when you want a balance between risk and reward, especially in competitive races.
It offers some insurance if your selection doesn’t win but still performs well. As long as it finishes in the paying places, you can still get a return, which makes each way betting a good choice in open fields where picking the winner is difficult.
Each way bets are also popular at bigger odds. Backing an outsider each way can be more forgiving, as a place finish at decent odds can still deliver a worthwhile return.
Overall, an each way bet suits bettors who want coverage beyond just a win, while keeping the chance of a full payout if their selection goes all the way.
