Casino Bonuses Explained
Learn how casino bonuses work, including free spins, deposit bonuses, wagering requirements, game weighting, expiry dates and bonus terms.

Casino bonuses explained
Casino bonuses add a reward to a qualifying action, such as opting in, making a deposit or placing cash wagers on selected games. The reward may be bonus funds, free spins or cashback, but the headline amount never tells you the full deal. Before joining a promotion, check what you have to do, how long you have and which rules apply to the reward.
Some casino bonuses have no wagering requirement. Others ask you to play through bonus funds or free-spin winnings before they can be withdrawn. Game restrictions, stake limits and expiry dates may also apply. The specific offer terms should always decide how you use a promotion.
The word bonus can also describe a feature inside a casino game. A slot free-spins round or a bonus round in a live game show is part of that game's rules. It is different from a promotion added to your account.
How do casino bonuses work?
An online casino bonus normally has a qualifying stage and a reward stage. You complete the stated action first, then the reward is credited to your account or made available to claim. Opting in may be required before any qualifying play counts.
A promotion can work in several ways:
- You open the offer and read its terms.
- You opt in if the promotion requires it.
- You complete the qualifying action with cash, such as making an eligible deposit or wagering on named games.
- The bonus funds, free spins or other reward are credited automatically or become available to claim.
- You use the reward before its expiry date and follow any wagering, game or maximum-stake rules attached to it.
Completing the qualifying action does not always mean the reward can be withdrawn immediately. A bonus balance is separate from the cash you deposited. If wagering requirements apply, the terms will explain how much qualifying play is needed before bonus winnings become withdrawable.
Our offers do not all use the same rules. One promotion may count cash wagers on a short list of slots, while another may award free spins for a particular game. Check the live terms instead of applying the conditions of an earlier offer to a new one.
What casino bonus types are there?
The names used for casino promotions describe how the reward is awarded, not how valuable it will be. Two bonuses of the same type can have different qualifying spends, expiry periods and wagering rules.
Bonus type | How it usually works | Terms worth checking |
|---|---|---|
Deposit bonus | Bonus funds are linked to an eligible deposit, sometimes as a percentage match up to a limit | Minimum deposit, match percentage, reward cap, payment exclusions and wagering requirement |
Free spins | A set number of spins is awarded for one or more named slot games | Spin value, eligible game, claim period, expiry and treatment of winnings |
No-deposit casino bonus | A reward is available without a qualifying deposit, although registration and account checks may still apply | Eligibility, reward value, wagering, expiry and any withdrawal limit |
Cashback casino bonus | Part of qualifying net losses is returned as cash or bonus funds | Calculation period, cashback percentage, maximum return and the status of the credited funds |
Reload bonus | An existing customer receives a reward linked to a later deposit or qualifying action | Opt-in, qualifying dates, deposit rules and reward conditions |
A matched deposit is not extra cash that can automatically be withdrawn. If a promotion matches a £20 deposit with £20 in bonus funds, your account should show the cash and bonus balances separately. The £20 bonus is then governed by the offer terms.
Free spins also need more than a headline count. Ten spins worth 20p each carry the same total spin value as 20 spins worth 10p each. The game, spin value and conditions attached to any winnings are all part of the offer.
What do casino bonus terms mean?
Casino bonus terms explain how an offer qualifies, runs and ends. The most useful details are usually collected in a short set of conditions rather than hidden behind the reward name
Term | What it means |
|---|---|
Opt-in | You must actively join the promotion before qualifying activity counts |
Eligible games | The games that can qualify for the reward or count towards a wagering requirement |
Bonus funds | Promotional funds held separately from your cash balance |
Wagering requirement | The amount of qualifying play needed before bonus funds or related winnings can be withdrawn |
Game weighting | The percentage of a stake that counts towards the wagering requirement |
Maximum bet | The largest permitted stake while using or wagering a bonus |
Reward cap | The maximum bonus, number of free spins or cashback amount available |
Claim period | The time allowed to accept or collect a reward after qualifying |
Bonus expiry | The point at which an unused reward or unfinished requirement ends |
Eligibility can depend on age, location, account status and verification. A promotion may also be limited to one person, household or payment account. If an account is not eligible, completing the advertised action will not create an entitlement to the reward.
Payment methods can matter with deposit bonuses. The terms should identify any excluded method and the minimum qualifying amount. Check this before depositing, not after the reward fails to appear.
How do casino wagering requirements work?
Casino wagering requirements tell you how much must be staked with qualifying play before bonus-related funds can be withdrawn. The calculation starts with the amount named in the terms and multiplies it by the wagering figure.
For example, a £20 bonus with a 10x wagering requirement creates £200 of required wagering:
£20 bonus × 10 = £200 qualifying play
That figure is the total amount staked, not the amount you are expected to lose. Each settled qualifying wager moves the progress counter, although the balance can rise or fall as games are played. Completing £200 of wagering does not guarantee that any money will remain at the end.
UK-licensed operators cannot set a wagering requirement above 10x the bonus amount. This limit has applied to new incentives since 19 January 2026. An offer can still use a lower multiplier or have no wagering requirement at all.
What does game weighting mean?
Game weighting decides how much of each stake counts towards a wagering requirement. If an eligible slot contributes 100%, a £1 spin reduces the outstanding requirement by £1. If another game contributes 20%, the same £1 stake reduces it by 20p.
A game can also be excluded completely. Playing an excluded title may leave the wagering total unchanged and could breach the promotion rules if bonus funds are used there. Do not assume that every game contributes at the same rate.
The maximum bet matters for the same reason. A stake above the stated limit can breach the bonus terms even when the game itself is eligible. Check both conditions before starting play.
Can you use casino bonuses on slots and live casino games?
The promotion terms decide which parts of our online casino qualify. An offer may name individual games, cover one game category or use a list of excluded titles. Access to a game through your account does not mean that it counts towards every promotion.
Free-spins rewards are normally tied to one or more named online slots. Check the game name and spin value before claiming them. The free spins supplied by the promotion are separate from any free-spins feature built into the slot itself.
A live casino bonus is a promotion connected to selected live dealer games. Some offers may count cash wagers on eligible live casino games, while others exclude live tables or apply a lower contribution rate. Roulette, blackjack and live game shows should not be assumed to have the same weighting.
Bonus rounds inside slots and live game shows are game features rather than promotional rewards. They are triggered and settled under the game's own rules, do not create an account bonus balance and do not carry a separate promotional wagering requirement.
Can you withdraw your deposit while a bonus is active?
At a UK-licensed casino, restrictions attached to a bonus must not be applied to your deposit balance. Cash and bonus balances should be displayed separately, and you should be able to withdraw your remaining deposit and winnings produced with that cash.
Withdrawing cash may mean giving up an active bonus, depending on the promotion. The account should explain what will be removed before the withdrawal is confirmed. That is not the same as blocking access to your own money until a bonus requirement has been completed.
Withdrawal conditions can still apply to bonus funds and winnings generated through bonus play. The terms should state when those funds become withdrawable and what happens if the bonus is cancelled or expires.
What should you check before claiming a casino bonus?
Start with the cost of qualifying, then work through the conditions in the order you are likely to meet them. A large reward can be a poor fit if it requires more play than you intended or applies only to games you do not want to use.
Before opting in, check:
- The qualifying deposit or cash wagering amount
- The reward value and any cap
- The wagering requirement and what amount it applies to
- The games that qualify and their contribution rates
- The maximum permitted bet
- The claim deadline and bonus expiry
- The rules for free-spin winnings or bonus funds
- What happens to the reward if you withdraw or cancel it
Keep the offer page open until the reward has been credited and used. If anything looks wrong, save the promotion name, date and account transaction details before contacting support.
A bonus is optional. Leave it unclaimed if meeting its conditions would make you spend more or play longer than planned.
