How to Play Baccarat and Understand the Rules

Learn how to play baccarat, how card values and third card rules work, and what Player, Banker and Tie bets mean before a round begins.

How to play baccarat and understand the rules

To play baccarat, you bet on which of two hands will finish closer to 9. One hand is called Player and the other is called Banker. You can also bet that both hands will finish with the same total.

The names can make the game sound more complicated than it is. You do not control the Player hand, and the Banker hand does not belong to the dealer. They are simply the names of the two possible hands. Once bets close, the cards are dealt and the drawing rules are applied automatically.

Baccarat differs from many other casino games because there are no hit, stand or fold decisions after you place the bet. Understanding the card values and the third card rules is enough to follow the result.

How do you play baccarat?

A baccarat round begins with bets on Player, Banker, Tie or any side bets offered at that table. Two cards are then dealt to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand.

The basic sequence is:

  1. Choose Player, Banker or Tie.
  2. Place the stake before the betting period closes.
  3. Two cards are dealt to each hand.
  4. The totals are calculated using baccarat card values.
  5. A third card may be dealt according to fixed rules.
  6. The hand closest to 9 wins.

The most common casino form is Punto Banco. In this version, neither the customer nor the dealer chooses when either hand draws. The rules decide every action.

What are the card values in baccarat?

Baccarat card values are based on the number printed on each card, with separate values for Aces, 10s and court cards.

Baccarat value

Ace

1

2 through 9

Face value

10

0

Jack, Queen and King

Suits have no value. A King of hearts and a King of clubs both count as 0, while every 7 counts as 7.

How are baccarat hands scored?

Add the values of the cards and use only the final digit of the total. A baccarat hand can therefore only score between 0 and 9.

For example:

  • A 4 and a 3 make 7.
  • A 7 and an 8 make 15, so the baccarat total is 5.
  • A Queen and a 9 make 9 because the Queen counts as 0.
  • An Ace, a 4 and an 8 make 13, so the total is 3.

There is no bust in baccarat. A total above 9 simply loses its first digit. The hand finishing closest to 9 wins the round.

What do Player, Banker and Tie mean in baccarat?

Player, Banker and Tie are the three main baccarat bets. They describe the result you are backing rather than a hand that you personally control.

Player bet

A Player bet wins when the Player hand finishes closer to 9. It normally pays even money, written as 1 to 1. A £10 winning bet therefore produces £10 in profit as well as the returned stake.

Banker bet

A Banker bet wins when the Banker hand finishes closer to 9. Under standard commission baccarat rules, it pays even money minus a 5% commission. A £10 winning bet would usually produce £9.50 in profit.

The commission is applied because the fixed drawing rules give the Banker hand a small statistical advantage. Some baccarat variants use different commission or payout rules, so check the paytable before betting.

Tie bet

A Tie bet wins when both hands finish with the same total. It commonly pays 8 to 1, although the payout can vary between games.

If the result is a tie and you backed Player or Banker, that main bet is normally returned. Separate side bets are settled according to their own rules.

What is a natural in baccarat?

A natural is a two-card total of 8 or 9. If either the Player or Banker hand has a natural, both hands stand and no third card is dealt.

A natural 9 beats a natural 8. If both hands have the same natural total, the result is a tie.

The term only applies to the first two cards. A total of 8 or 9 reached after drawing a third card is still a strong final total, but it is not called a natural.

When does the Player hand draw a third card?

The Player hand draws a third card when its first two cards total 0 through 5. It stands on 6 or 7. A natural 8 or 9 ends the drawing stage.

Player total

Action

0 through 5

Draw a third card

6 or 7

Stand

Natural 8 or 9

Both hands stand

This action is automatic. The person who placed a Player bet does not decide if another card should be taken.

When does the Banker hand draw a third card?

The Banker third card rule depends on the Banker total and, in some situations, the third card dealt to the Player hand.

If the Player stands on 6 or 7, the rule is simple. The Banker draws on 0 through 5 and stands on 6 or 7. If the Player draws, the following rules apply:

Banker total

When the Banker draws

0, 1 or 2

Always draws

3

Draws unless the Player’s third card is 8

4

Draws when the Player’s third card is 2 through 7

5

Draws when the Player’s third card is 4 through 7

6

Draws when the Player’s third card is 6 or 7

7

Always stands

Players do not need to memorise this table before placing a bet. The dealer or game software applies it automatically. Knowing the rule is still useful because it explains why one hand receives another card while the other stands.

What happens when both baccarat hands have the same total?

The round ends in a tie when the Player and Banker hands finish with equal totals. A winning Tie bet is paid at the rate shown in the game’s paytable.

Player and Banker bets normally push when a tie occurs. This means the stake is returned rather than settled as a win or loss. Side bets may still be settled separately.

Is Speed Baccarat played differently?

Speed Baccarat uses the same central objective and standard card values, but the betting window and round are shorter. It is designed for players who prefer less time between hands.

The faster pace does not give players control over third card decisions. Player and Banker cards are still drawn according to the game rules. Check the individual game information for its commission, payouts, side bets and table limits.

Speed Baccarat is available within the live casino games, where the cards are dealt by a live dealer and streamed as the round takes place.

Can previous baccarat results predict the next hand?

No. A sequence of Player, Banker or Tie results does not make a particular outcome due on the next round. Scoreboards record earlier hands, but they do not change the fixed drawing rules or guarantee that a sequence will continue.

Betting more after a loss also does not improve the probability of the next result. It only increases the amount placed at risk. Treat each baccarat round as a separate event and avoid using previous outcomes as a promise of what will happen next.

What should you check before playing baccarat?

Read the game information before placing a bet because baccarat variants can use different payouts, commissions, side bets and table limits.

Check:

  • The minimum and maximum stake
  • The Banker commission or alternative payout rule
  • The payout offered for a Tie
  • The rules and payouts for any side bets
  • The time available to place a bet

Set a spending limit and decide how long you plan to play before starting. A clear understanding of baccarat rules does not remove the house advantage or guarantee a winning session. Our safer gambling tools can help you manage time and spending.
