The Auld Enemy
I believe it is the first time ever that England and Scotland have competed in two high profile sports on the same day with the small matter of a Six nations Blockbuster at Murrayfield following this. What’s even more surprising to me is that this is the sides first meeting in International cricket since 2018 , a thrilling ODI that Scotland won in Edinburgh. This match-up would never have taken place if Bangladesh hadn’t pulled out of the Tournament and credit to the Scot’s with a decent effort in periods against the table topping Windies and then a real form boost in beating Italy who have gone on to dispose of Nepal.
Scottish Grit: Why the Auld Enemy Offers Huge Value
We have seen a shock of shorts with Zimbabwe beating Australia and I think the @7/1 about another here with Betwright seems fairly priced. The opening pair of George Munsey and Michael Jones I feel are being underestimated here in the run lines for the first wicket. Both were firing on all cylinders against Italy and Munsey averages close to 32 in IT20 cricket. He’s been getting some more recognition in the smaller franchise comps with strike rates consistently around the 150 mark in T20 cricket and I can see these two dealing with the Over 15.5 for the first wicket , Currently @17/20 with Betwright. Another promising factor for the Scottish is their recent course form at Eden Gardens, a track that generally is high scoring with the ball coming onto the bat nicely with a fast outfield early doors , followed by the spinners coming to the party in the middle overs.
The ever consistent All rounder Michael Leask , someone I have long been a fan of going back to his minimal starts for Somerset bowled beautifully against Italy with a 4Fer. He has always shown up in this Fixture historically smashing 42 off 16 in a 2014 ODI and has spoken at length about being pumped for this outing. He bowls tight off spinners and has 14 wickets in this format over the last year at an average of 11 , therefore the @7/2 for top team bowler makes plenty of appeal especially with the way England played the Windies spinners.
England seeking a complete performance
There has been a great deal of chatter about this England side and how unremarkable they have looked in their first two outings. No one can argue that following on from that defeat they come in here with no margin for error however I still have faith in Brook’s men and fully expect them to bounce back here @1/12. The performances of Bethell at 3 have been really encouraging and going back to his IPL 50 on only his 2nd outing shows his aptitude for subcontinent conditions.
The left hander is averaging 28 in T20I cricket with very little exposure and against the likes of bog standard county seamers in Wheal and Currie I think he can go big here. He’s @4/1 with Betwright this match for Top Bat and I am going to double down here with Bethell already on 88 Tournament runs and Scotland/Italy to come I think the @7/4 for top England tournament bat going in to the Super 8s (Hopefully!) is very good value.
Eden Gardens Fireworks: Targeting the Sixes Market
I can see whoever batting first setting a decent score and would definitely favour England strongly if winning the toss and batting first. If this is the case the total sixes line set at 15.5 is under threat. In the Opening two games at Eden Gardens 17 and 16 were hit and I can see a similar flow here. Back over 15.5 6s @4/6 with Betwright. I’ll be back to preview England’s final Group game against Italy and let’s hope nothing silly happens between now and then.
