The Beauty of Knockout Cricket
After a long drawn out Group stage albeit the excitement and intrigue around the associate members and the underperformance of some cricketing superpowers we are now seeing the upsides of World cup Cricket as we draw closer to the final four.Just briefly touching on the other Group where Pakistan need need to win by a very substantial margin batting first e.g Set 165 and Bowl NZ out for 100.
You would think chasing would make the Net Run rate calculations easier (NRR) so will have to see how that plays out. The Play on England to win the Group paid off and was a nice wager to pick up going into this weekend’s action.
Some interesting facts that we know so far:
- Pakistan require a substantial margin victory to swing Net Run Rate
- Batting first complicates NRR calculations
- Chasing generally simplifies qualification maths
- England already secured top spot
In terms of the decks this weekend expect a high scoring dead rubber at Delhi where 203+ has been the average score over the last 18 months with a couple of example markers in this tournament. It takes spin well and particularly favours leggies and seamers with pace off cutters.
The one key stat to takeaway from the Historic and iconic Eden Gardens is that India are 7 from 7 in T20I cricket dating right back to 2016 and it’s a venue which over time has seen them excel with the bat , So no real surprise in what is a must win knockout for both sides to see India @1/4 with Betwright.
African Showdown
Zimbabwe were a real surprise package to many in the group phase of this event winning 3 from 4 and dumping Australia out of the World cup. Brian Bennett has established himself once again on the world scene and the quality of their seamers had been commendable up until the Super 8s.
They did however put up a stellar effort in reaching 184 in response to India and the @9/1 Match market price has pushed out some of the derivative markets to attractive prices. The 6s market has been kind to us and Zim’s line here is all wrong. Earlier in the Comp against Oman the line was considerably higher (7.5) and against Australia it was the same at 5.5 but was odds on they’d hit the overs.
Zimbabwe’s six-hitting case becomes clearer when you break it down:
- 22 sixes across their two Super 8 matches
- 184 posted against India in high-pressure conditions
- Brad Evans: 5 tournament sixes, strike rate 200
- Sikandar Raza: 9 tournament sixes
- Line previously set at 7.5 earlier in the competition
They have power all the way down , just look at Brad Evans with 5 in the tournament striking at 200. Raza on 9 and the Imperious Bennett in top form. As a side they have 22 6s in two Super 8 matches and if SA bat big first time up this could look a very silly line so Back Zimbabwe Over 5.5 6s @Evs.
I am anticipating another bold showing from the Zim Batters here but do expect SA to run out cosy winners again and it could be a very similar flow to the previous meetings between the sides. If that is the case than a bowler with a great win-rate in this the top team wicket taker market is Corbin Bosch who loves bowling in India with an Avg of 14.83 with the ball (9 Poles in the Comp) and is a generous @7/2 to top the charts here too.
Hosts under the Pump
We are on India to reach the Final at Odds on and I am fairly confident the best side in the tournament will still do so at a venue they are excellent at. The top Order has now kicked into gear and their head to head with the Windies at Eden Gardens is 4 from 4 with a whitewash in a Bi-lateral series back in 2022. Despite this and the Windies collapse to SA last time up which showed their frailties and dependency on some players with the bat they managed to scrape themselves to a competitive total and in a one off game are surely a shade big @14/5 with Betwright.
Conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium suggest another run-heavy encounter:
- 203+ average first innings score (last 18 months)
- Pace-off cutters effective
- Leg-spin historically rewarded
- Chasing has proven tricky under scoreboard pressure
It’s an essence a bit of bet hedging but also the par scores of around 199 in T20 cricket at the venue speaks volume and a high scoring encounter will suit the Windies. Of course it will suit India too with that much talked up Engine room of SKY , Varma and Hardik all looking in flying form against Zimbabwe and I do still genuinely see them as favs , however I am a value hunter and the Windies are slightly too big here.
One man I will be looking to side with here is Sherfane Rutherford who fired earlier in the tournament against England with a proper late end romp (76*) and did a similar thing against SA in Centurion earlier on in the year (57*). He has a modest average of 24.6 in IPL cricket but the starts he’s made throughout this World cup indicate a player whose stock is on the rise. I fancy him to get after Axar and Varun in this encounter and a late flurry could see @7/1 for Windies Top Bat as a value bet.
