The Tournament is heating up
With England the first side through to the Semi final’s in Group 2 of the Super 8s and a big clash between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on Wednesday all attention will be on Group 1 this Thursday. There was somewhat of a shock win for South Africa, albeit labelled by many as the second best side and potentially that meeting with India repeated in a week or so’s time in the Final in the offing, that meeting in the final is priced up @3/1 with Betwright.
The 11 that faced India the other night have all played at least 2 games in the IPL so the context of home conditions in a sense is removed. The manner of the victory was what ruffled the co-hosts and the puzzling selection of Washington Sundar over Vice captain Axar Patel caused a stir. Similarly the Windies produced the batting display of the tournament and their 254 became the 2nd highest score in the World Cup’s history. They continue to impress and a win against SA would blow the whole thing wide open. The @10/1 to win the Tournament could look massive here as the permutations in this group could go down to Net Run rate.
Windies Seamers to step up in Informative clash
This has all the makings of a proper coin-flip of a match up. Shimron Hetmyer blasting 85 off 34 and Shai Hope rolling out consistent scores alongside the assistance of the powerful middle and lower order mean West Indies can put up 185+ scores at regularity. The head-to-head sits virtually level at 15-14 and an argument can be made that the @13/8 with Betwright could be slightly shorter.
I am a big fan of their current crop of white ball seamers too with the consistency in line and length in the form of the everpresent Jason Holder and the sharp Shamar Joseph. In addition to this there is a clear preference to facing spin from the South African engine room, just look how they dealt with Chakravarthy last time up. In fact 15 of the 23 wickets lost in the tournament so far is to seam and the dot ball % is considerably higher against seamers. With this in mind, siding with the young Matthew Forde for top Windies bowler @4/1 with Betwright looks a value play. Forde can keep it tight in the powerplay and has the variation late on to come back and pick up wickets as seen against Zimbabwe and Italy. He also averages 17.11 with the ball against SA in international cricket and is a strong fancy in this market.
Tight 6s Match Bet
The sixes match bet market is very interesting here with the Windies odds on to hit the most maximums. I feel this is purely based on both their record in this tournament (Hetmyer has 17 alone and Rutherford 11) and also the fact they beat SA 2-1 in this metric in the recent Bi-lateral series. If the two big guns mentioned there fail I believe Brevis (8) / Miller (8) / Rickleton (9) who are all seeing it nicely can make the @5/4 with Betwright for South Africa to win the sixes Match Bet a great punt. Furthermore they are 4 out of 5 in this tournament in this market.
India to Get back on track
After the limp effort in chasing the other night , I fully expect India to get back to winning ways here at a ground they are 2 from 2 in T20I cricket where runs have been flowing heavily. The stats don't lie and as a side they are excellent front runners currently on a run of a 9 match winning streak when batting first through this tournament but also the prior series against SA and NZ (Chennai 51-40 when batting first). There is definite pressure on the Top 3 currently but I do expect them to ease the burden on the power packed duo of SKY and Hardik here against the lesser Zimbabwe. Tilak Varma has made 4 25+ starts without going on so far and just last year scored a sublime 72* against England at this venue. I think he is very well equipped here and back him @7/2 for Top India Bat.
If India do bat first I’d expect Zimbabwe to struggle in response to an above par score, similarly against the West Indies last time up. Brian Bennett started the tournament in great form and without his early runs you could argue they may not have got over the line in those big group stage wins. Only 3 of their lineup have over 60+ tournament runs in 4 Outings and the experienced Raza has been adding key contributions so far. With vast Franchise experience you can count on him to show some metal in the big games and if there is an early collapse Raza can top score. He’s correctly priced @16/5 to do so.
